Did you Retire from the USAF with a Disability Retirement AND Retire at a Lower Grade after an Officer Grade Determination?
If YES, then Your Rank can be restored to the Higher Grade
- Recently, USAF officials determined that Air Force members in past years had undergone an Officer Grade Determination (OGD) after a Physical Evaluation Board had determined the member would be eligible for a Disability Retirement (Rated at 30% or greater).
- Air Force officials determined that this practice was not in line with the intent of the statute, 10 U.S. Code §1370 as it relates to Commissioned Officers and the “Rule for Retirement in Highest Grade Held Satisfactorily.”
- In a nutshell, if you retiring from the USAF with a Disability Retirement (30% or more) and do not have a pending Board of Inquiry (BOI) or court-martial, then you will not undergo an OGD to determine highest grade help satisfactorily and will be retired at your current grade.
- If you were medically retired from the USAF and were retired at a lower grade after an OGD, you are eligible to get your records corrected to the higher grade by submitting an application to the Air Force Board for the Correction of Military Records (AFBCMR).
